Halloween in the Castro
The annual Halloween celebration in the Castro district of San Francisco began in the 1940s as a neighborhood costume contest. By the late 1970s, it had shifted from a children's event to a celebration that continued to grow into a massive annual street party—attracting an estimated 300,000 revelers in 2005. In 2006 a shooting wounded nine people and prompted the city to call off the event. (Wikipedia)
Halloween in the Castro was sometimes shocking to see—“A slap in the face of public taste.” This image was taken about the year 2000 and shows the enthusiasm expressed by the revelers.
